Happy Thanksgiving!!

Thanksgiving is unfamiliar event for Japanese people.
In the U.S., people eat turkey, but eating turkey is also unfamiliar for  Japanese people.

Origin of Japanese religion is ‘Shintoism’, and after Buddhism came into Japan.

So the most of Japanese do not think ‘Shintoism’ as a religion, and it is considered as a part of their culture.

The majority of religion is Buddhism, however, there is a mixture of many religions.

In Japan, we go to shrine(‘Shintoism’) and temple(Buddhism) on New Year's Day, but also we celebrate Christmas on Christmas day, and also Valentine's day.

Some people hold a wedding ceremony in a church, even thought they are not baptized.
holding a wedding ceremony in a church is very poplar.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Kaiten sushi

Initially, sushi was preservation food, so people pickled fish. and they ate it with rice. Back to the Edo period, people started to eat raw fish with rice as sushi.
Nowadays, eating sushi at kaiten sushi(like kuru-kuru sushi) is poplar and major.  Recently, kaiten sushi is remarkably making rapid progress.
Used de kaiten sushi in Japan was the same as kuru-kuru sushi in Hawaii.
However, now we can order sushi from a touch panel screen!!

tabelog

And the sushi that you ordered come to you by a rapid train.

Sicne sushi are going around, many people cares for hygienically.
so some sushi restaurants covered the sushi.
and put microtip under the dishes, and it measures the time.
After a specified time, the sushi will be trash.

I really love sushi.
I think it is very convenient, but also I regret it because there will be many waste of sushi.

Yokai Watch

Yokai Watch is a very popular animation and game among Japanese children.
Even thought I have never seen it, I worked at after school care in Japan in this summer vacation, and I earned knowledge of it from children in the school care.
Yokai Watch can be considered as Pokemon for a new generation.
Yokai is the generic name for monsters, ogres, fairies or other fantastic creatures.
The concept of  animation is all bad happenings are coursed by Youkai.
For example,  I could not get up on time, and I was late for school, the reason why because Yokai. Because of Yokai, my mother get mad at me. etc

Since Yokai watch is very popular, it becomes one of social phenomenons in Japan.
Almost all children love it, so, Pokemon is almost phasing out by Yokai watch.
According to Wikipedia, Pokemon started in 1996. Pokemon boom was so long, so some professional got together, and they tried to make something that can subversive Pokemon.
They made Yokai watch, and it successfully became popular.
But I do not think that Youkai watch will not be popular as long as Pokemon.

Japanese language variations

In Japanese, there are the two types of language variations.

First about regional difference, each Japanese area has its own different dialect. Some dialects are completely different from what we know as the standard Japanese.

Even though Japan is a small nation unlike English speaking countries, many Japanese people do not understand the dialect if they are from different prefectures.  Additionally, there existed gender variation since Japanese has begun to infiltrate to Japanese people.

In ancient time, they use different types of written words between men and women.

Currently, the difference between men and women are the change at suffix of the sentence.

There is another gender difference which is using variations of the first person such as men for “ Boku()” and  women for “ Watashi()

Meanwhile, linguistic variation within the individual in Japanese consists of three kinds of respectful language, which are honorific, humble, and polite.

They have to change the language depending on who they are talking to and to be aware of the surroundings.

Use of the honorific is for talking to people who are older than them, superior people, or to customers. The humble form is used to describe themselves to people who are older then you, superior people, or to customers.

Last, the polite language is the most familiar and the easiest to use and familiar with. Furthermore, there are some kinds of forms of address that change depending on person and what kind of relations you have.

ARASHI

Hi there!

I am Aeri!

I will write about Japanese culture in this blog.

Today, I want to tell you about Arashi who is one of my favorite boy's bands. I am their Fan Club member since 2006.

Arashi consists of 5 members, who are Satoshi Ono, Sho Sakurai, Masaki Aiba, Kazunari Ninomiya, and Jun Matsumoto. They are very popular in Japan and other countries.

Their activities are not only singing, but also, acting, and they have some their own TV programs. When you watch Japanese TV, you will see them almost every day on TV.

Hawaii is a significant place for them because they were formed in Hawaii 15 years ago, and few weeks ago, they had a concert at Kapolei for 2days! Of cause, I went to the concert both days.

My favorite Arashi’s songs are Tomadoi nagara (とまどいながら), Carnival night part 2, oh! Yeah, Jam, and so on. If you get interested in, check it out!
